Child dies in Glen, relatives hospitalised

The death of a 10-year-old student of the C.W Prescod Primary School is the subject of a police investigation.

A release issued by the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), noted that investigators attached to the Calliaqua Police Station in the South-Central Division launched the investigation on Saturday, September 14, 2024 in Glen.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that around midday on Saturday September 14, 2024, the police at the Calliaqua Police Station received a report via telephone that a family of four was discovered in their house in Glen in distress and one of them appeared to be dead. The police immediately responded to the report and visited the scene,” the release said.

The report goes on to state that on arrival at the scene, the police discovered four females – one adult, and three minors in the house.

This is the house in Glen where police, responding to a report, discovered four females – one adult, and three minors in the house. The adult and two of the minors were breathing, while a 10-year-old appeared motionless.

“Three of them were lying on a bed, and one on the ground. On closer examination, three of them were breathing and the 10-year-old appeared motionless.

“The District Medical Officer was informed and later arrived on the scene and pronounced the 10 year old deceased. The other three occupants were transported by the police to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for medical intervention,” the release explained.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the young girl, and the police is encouraging anyone with information that can assist to contact them.

On Monday morning, September 16, 2024, SEARCHLIGHT visited the area in Glen where the child lived with her mother and two other siblings. The mother was not at the rented property, but had already been discharged from hospital.

A neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity said initial reports claim that the family was affected by a gas leak.

“These children, I think one was 10, one is about three, and one is a baby, from the day break they are all over the neighbourhood looking for fruits. They are all over on every fruit tree picking fruits, is like they are always hungry,” he told SEARCHLIGHT.

He added that a male neighbour of the family sometimes helps out the mother, giving her food to prepare meals for the children.

A man who claimed to be close to the mother identified the woman by the name Shanique, and chided the reporter for trying to reach out to the mother.
