Senior Police officer wants dark areas lit with street lights

A high ranking member of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force is suggesting that having street lights in certain dark areas can help prevent crimes from taking place at those locations.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Trevor Bailey expressed the need for the St Vincent and the Electricity Services Limited (VINLEC), and members of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), to meet and discuss this matter.

Speaking on WE FM’s Voices programme on Monday night, the senior officer said there is a need for VINLEC to work along with the police in putting lights in certain areas that are too dark, and where people have to traverse at night.

Bailey said this situation is giving rise to criminality and that the Police have already identified these areas, and they have a responsibility to bring it to the attention of the management of VINLEC.

Apart from meeting with the electricity company, ACP Bailey said the police also need to have a conversation with property owners,   whose property might enable criminal activities.

Properties such as land that is over- taken by tall grass and bushes, and abandoned and derelict buildings.

The experienced officer said that people are using such areas for concealment to commit crimes.

“The time has come when we need to have this open and frank conversation,” ACP Bailey indicated.
