Radio Announcer, Fisherman charged for wounding and assaulting each other
A POPULAR disc jockey/radio announcer was charged for shooting a fisherman in his hip, left hand and right leg with a gun. That same fisherman was later taken before the court charged with striking the disc jockey/ radio announcer on his left hand with a glass bottle.
Christopher “2 kool Chris” Jones, 56, of Richmond Hill appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika Mckenzie on July 24, 2024, where he pleaded not guilty that on July 4, 2024 at Bay Street, Kingstown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Kevin Patterson, a 31 year old fisherman of Largo Height, by shooting him in his hip, left hand, and right leg with a gun.
The prosecutor, Corporal of Police 817 Stapleton did not object to Jones’ bail. Stapleton said that Jones is already on station bail and asked that his bail continues. He said that 12 witnesses are slated to testify in the matter, and more witnesses may be added to that list in the course of three weeks before the file is completed.
Senior Magistrate Mckenzie ordered that disclosure be made on September 27, 2024, to Defence Counsel Grant Connell who is representing the accused, and that the trial begins on November 27, 2024. Connell informed the court that Jones was arrested while on his job. He also said that Jones made a cross complaint against the virtual complainant in the matter.
Senior Magistrate Mckenzie then questioned how a charge was laid against Jones if a cross complaint was made. She called on the arresting officer to provide clarity in the matter. The officer confirmed that Jones indeed made a report against the virtual complainant. Connell said that the officer is just following the instructions that were given by his superiors.
“The instructions from the hierarchy override common sense,” Connell told the court. Mckenzie said that the file was incomplete and vacated the trial date.
She then ordered that a completed file be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution on August 30, 2024. Patterson, who was later arrested, appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on July 24, 2024, charged that on July 4, 2024 in Heritage Square, Kingstown, he struck Jones on his left hand with a glass bottle, causing actual bodily harm.
Patterson pleaded not guilty to the offence and was granted bail in the sum of $1,500 with one surety. The matter was adjourned to September 6, 2024 for trial.
