SVG makes history with first hosting of Rotary Conference

St Vincent and the Grenadines has pulled off a “significant milestone” with the successful staging of the 2024 Rotary District 7030 Conference.

Through the tireless planning of the local leg of the Rotary Club, the conference saw hundreds of Rotarians converge on the mainland for a weekend of workshops and discussions.

District Chair, Shafia London, in her address at the opening ceremony held at the Kingstown Baptist Church on Friday, April 19, 2024, described the gathering as a historic one.

“This conference marks a significant milestone in our rotary journey. It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our members, partners and supporters who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this moment. As we embark on this historic gathering, let us take a moment and ensure that we reflect on the incredible achievements of Rotary District 7030 and the transformative work that lies ahead.”

She challenged the participants to dig deep during the sessions to come up with solutions to issues.

“We will explore all approaches to address the most pressing challenges facing our world.”

A wide range of topics were discussed over the two days including reports on mental health, child obesity prevention, as well as natural disasters. Participants also heard reports from District Governor, Brian Glasgow, and plans for the 2025 Conference.

Glasgow, at the opening ceremony, spoke openly about the challenges of airlift and accommodation faced by the planning committee in pulling off the conference.

Though St Vincent and the Grenadines was part of the Rotary International family over the past 50 years, this was its first conference hosting.

“In many other islands we could have the conference at a single hotel. Unfortunately our hotel industry is only now beginning to blossom. We have had some remarkable challenges with airlift. For example, just a month ago to go to Martinque, I had to go to Barbados to St Lucia then get a ferry and go to Martinque. Since then a number of Rotarians were actually able to come from Martinque directly. So we have made some progress even within a month.”

Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves also delivered remarks at the opening ceremony where he thanked the Rotary Club for its contribution.

“I know whatever you do, that your goals are aligned with ours.”

Rotary International is one of the largest service organizations in the world with over 1.4 million members.
