Sentence postponed for woman in the death of 83 year old Union Island man

A woman who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the killing an elderly man of Union Island will have to spend a few more days awaiting her fate after her sentencing was adjourned yesterday, July 17.

Sheba Charles is now expected to be sentenced on July 28, after High Court Judge, Justice Rickie Burnett adjourned her sentence to allow the prosecution and defence counsel to provide necessary documents for sentencing.

Charles of Vermont/Union Island, was initially charged that on November 26, 2020 with malice aforethought, she caused the death of 83 year old Ulric Hutchinson of Union Island by an unlawful act.

However, having denied the charge of murder, during her trial the accused made a request for the charge to be re-read and she pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

This plea was accepted by the prosecution on May 12, 2023.

Justice Burnett told the court yesterday, July 17, that he is ready to complete the sentence, however he is awaiting submissions from the defence and the prosecution which are expected to be provided during this week.

Appearing for the crown, Director of Public Prosecutions Sejilla Mcdowall held papers for counsel Rose Ann Richardson, while the defence is being represented by Jomo Thomas.
