Colonaire residents clean up after Bret
RESIDENTS along the Colonaire Public Road were on Monday, June 26, continuing with efforts to clean up their community that had been littered with debris during the passage of Tropical Storm Bret.
COLONAIRE’S COASTLINE was littered with sargassun and other debris on Friday.
These residents who live along the coastline were among persons most affected by the storm which caused flooding to their yards and some homes with surging sea water.
It resulted in some families having to flee from their homes as the sea water encroached; now they are undertaking a massive clean up.
The sea surge washed ashore large amounts of Sargassum seaweed that covered many yards along the coastline in an ugly coat of brown.
With the seaweed came marine life like crabs and small fishes, washed ashore by the huge swells.
Since Friday, residents have been busy trying to clean up their homes and yards.
On Monday, the Roads Bridges and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) provided the use of a backhoe to help in the clean up effort.
An official from BRAGSA confirmed to SEARCHLIGHT that the backhoe was being used to clear the debris that had washed up along the coastline.
The waste material was being piled into heaps to be removed by trucks.
Leroy ‘Fresh’ Pope, a resident of the area told SEARCHLIGHT that they are now breathing a sigh of relief as the area is much cleaner than it had been in the immediate aftermath of the passage of Tropical Storm Bret.
He thanked BRAGSA for clearing the road to their homes, which had been blocked with debris for the past few days.
Additionally, Pope said he and the other residents are relieved that the piles of Sargassum seaweed have been removed.
He said the material had begun to release a foul odour and was attracting flies, and was a potential health hazard.
With the heavy debris already gone, life along the coastline in Colonaire is returning to normal.
