Pedal cyclist found guilty of reckless riding

Pedal cyclist Tyrie Woods of Sandy Bay has been found guilty of reckless riding of a bicycle.

The court heard that on May 15, 2017, at about 1:50 pm, the virtual complainant Francis May, who goes by the alias ‘Wood Pipe,’ was walking along the Sandy Bay public road when according to him, he saw the young man on bicycle coming towards him at a fast pace.

“I knows nothing after Your Worship; I went unconscious,” May declared.

The 81-year-old pedestrian told the court he broke his arm and spent a day at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital because of his injuries.

The defendant told the court he knew he was off his hand but that was to avoid several potholes in the road.

“As I pass the corner with the bell still beating, Mr May jumped in front the bike wheel. I don’t know if his eyes got dazzle, but we all fell down. When I looked, I saw blood and I called ‘Cancer’ to give me a hand and we put him in the vehicle and took him clinic.”

Prosecutor Delroy Tittle asserted that Woods must have been speeding to create such injuries, that he had no brakes, did not use his bell and could not be going down hill around a corner slowly.

After listening to the evidence at the Georgetown Magistrates Court on March 12, Magistrate Bertie Pompey found Woods guilty. He stated that the bicycle should have been inspected, but it was never recovered and no report was made to the police.

Woods was ordered to pay $200 forthwith or spend two months in prison and a further $200 to be paid in two weeks time or four months imprisonment.(GHJ)
