Kyle James receives PM’s Award for Academic Excellence

The 2015 Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence was presented to St Vincent and the Grenadines’ top scholar Kyle James last Friday at the Schools’ Independence Rally, held at the Victoria Park.

James received $10,000 and a gold medal, {{more}}along with a fully funded five-year scholarship for demonstrating yet again, exceptional academic ability.

In 2008, he topped the common entrance exams and in 2013 gained nine Grade 1 passes with A profiles in eight of the 11 subject areas in which he secured passes in CXC.

This year, he secured all Grade 1 passes in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) in both units of Chemistry, Physics, Pure Mathematics, French and Communication Studies.

Speaking on his career pursuits, he was quoted stating “I want to be a chemical or molecular engineer; through my work in this field I want to make a positive contribution to the world.”

The Cane Hall resident is one of 14 students who received national scholarships this year.

Daniel Stewart, Paige Veira, David Browne, Laurel Gibson, Omar Edwards, Judaja Prescott, Kaela Barrett, Amog Jayarangaiah, Shanika John, Luzianne Matthias, K-Wani Roberts, Rita Alexander and Sonja Hull also received fully funded five-year scholarships.

Kristal Cain, Adrian Constance, Zonique Dublin, Tianna Homer, Allesandro Peters were the five recipients of the exhibition award, which includes being fully funded for three years in their university studies.

Bursary awardees, however, will receive $20,000 each year for a three-year period. They are Jamarl Alexander, Azel Daniel, K’ Andrew France-Beckford, Jomol Lewis, Genese Nichols, Antonia Marks, Clint Nelson, Shontae Bacchus, Zachary Williams, Brianna Jack, Najhma McKenzie, Amber-Marie Murphy.

At the rally, Minister of Education Girlyn Miguel implored young persons to be patriotic in their approach to nation building.

“We must all identify with the national aspirations and goals of our land and do the necessary work to help her achieve them,” she said, urging persons to take their education seriously and work together in sports and the creative arts.

She congratulated the 31 awardees by stating that “they represent the embodiment of hard work discipline and commitment and are living proof of what it takes to be successful.” (AS)
