Tevin Slater named ‘Senior Footballer of the Year’

Tevin Slater, national Under-23 and senior player, was last Friday night named as the ‘Senior Footballer of the Year,’ when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation held its Awards and Presentation Ceremony at Frenches House.

The unassuming Slater had catalogued a series of performances leading up to his award.{{more}}

He was the talisman for his club, Campdonia-Chelsea, in the 2014 National Club Championships, helping them to second place, whilst copping the leading goal scoring award.

This enabled Slater to be named the Most Valuable Player.

Slater went on to be South Leeward’s top goal scorer, which saw that community crowned as winners of the 2015 National Inter-Community League championships.

To the good, Slater was adjudged the Most Valuable Player as well.

For St Vincent and the Grenadines, Slater scored three goals in the tie with Guyana in the World Cup qualifiers, June 10 and 14.

This put him among the leading goal scorers in the Caribbean Football Union’s chart in the qualifiers.

He then went on to latch a hat-trick for the Under-23 outfit against Trinidad and Tobago in the Olympics qualifiers in Puerto Rico, June 27.

Before the Puerto Rico outing, Slater was on the score sheet in the second leg of the first round tie versus Dominica, as St Vincent and the Grenadines ran away 4-0 winners on aggregate.

Carving out a name for himself both locally and regionally, Slater will feature in the Under-23’s next assignment in Haiti against the host in the semi-finals of the CFU grouping, and in the next phase of the World Cup qualification, if St Vincent and the Grenadines comes out good in its eligibility battle with the sport’s governing body – FIFA.

Other senior awardees

Whilst Slater took the spotlight, there were other male performers who on the night were recipients, but who made up the supporting cast.

The Most Outstanding Goalkeeper in the premier division of national club championships was Camdonia’s Sylvanus Baptiste, with his teammate Andrew Durham, the Most Outstanding Defender.

Champions of the division Hope International pocketed the Most Outstanding Midfielder award, taken by Dwayne Dennie.

In the national inter-community league, taking the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper accolade was Calliaqua’s Noel Gaymes; Most Outstanding Defender was Andrew Durham of South Leeward, while Central Kingstown’s pair of Damal Francis and Azinho Solomon were the Most Outstanding Midfielder and Most Goals recipient respectively.

Three of the four awards handed out in the first division went to the champion team Greiggs.

Ainsley Edwards took the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper award, while Dan Laborde was the Most Outstanding Midfielder and Valdo Anderson, the Most Outstanding Goal Scorer.(RT)
