Francis fined $4000 for cannabis possession

Barrouallie resident Philmore Francis has three months in which to come up with $3000, or he runs the risk of going to prison for one year.{{more}}

Francis appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday, May 4 and pleaded guilty to possession of 1,742 grams of cannabis.

Chief Magistrate Sonya Young fined Francis $4000, of which $1000 was paid forthwith.

The facts read out in court heard that Port Police Officer 009 Douglas was at the Grenadines Wharf when a cart operator was seen approaching the wharf carrying a box and a travelling bag. Minutes later Francis arrived at the wharf and stood next to the box and travelling bag.

Douglas became suspicious and requested a search of the items. Three taped packages and a black plastic bag were found containing the marijuana.

When cautioned, Francis replied: “Officer is ah brejin gimme to carry to Mustique.”

Just before passing sentence, Magistrate Young expressed her dissatisfaction at what had taken place.

“I am really unhappy. I am not happy about it all…” Young said.

Young said she was imposing a stiff fine on Francis, because Mustique is one of this country’s main tourist destinations and the fact that he is employed as a gardener there.

Francis explained to the court that “I just got caught up. Sorry about that.”
