Fraser, who hid 1,634 grams of cannabis in a sack of rice, was on Wednesday, May 4, fined $4,500 to be paid in three months or he would spend one year in jail.

Chief Magistrate Sonya Young imposed the sentence on the Sandy Bay resident at the Serious Offences Court. Young ordered that $1,000 of his fine be paid forthwith.

Information surfacing at the court revealed that on May 3, at about 10: 45 a.m., a Port Police officer saw a cart operator in the vicinity of the Kingstown Wharf and asked what was in the bag he was carrying on the cart.

The cart man then pointed out to Fraser to the police. Fraser admitted the bag belonged to him and a search conducted. The bag was cut open and four taped packages was found in a the small sack of rice.

Fraser admitted to the court that the bag was cut open for the drugs to be placed and then was sewed.

In determining her sentence, Magistrate Young said she took into account the way in which the drug was packaged and that it was a considerable amount.
