Chitan appeared before Senior Magistrate Donald Browne at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, August 17, and pleaded guilty to entering the state by boat and disembarking without permission of the Immigration authorities.

The facts read out in court stated that Chitan arrived in St Vincent on August 9, 2010. On Sunday, August 15, members of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) who were on patrol in Chateaubelair nabbed Chitan on the beach there, in the company of a Vincentian, Bernard Roberts, who also appeared before Magistrate Browne on gun and ammunition possession charges.

Chitan told the Court that he knew Roberts from being in Grenada as a fisherman and they set out on a fishing trip from Grenada, but didn’t know how they ended up in St Vincent waters.

After experiencing difficulties, Chitan said they docked the boat at Rose Place and were given a ride by another boat to Chateubelair. He said it was his first time coming to St Vincent.

Chitan will be deported immediately after serving his prison sentence. (KW)
