Bowens, 18, a labourer of Ottley Hall, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in the Serious Offences Court to possession of one Ruger GP 100-357 Magnum revolver and six rounds of .38 special ammunition.
Chief Magistrate Sonya Young imposed the three-year sentence on Bowens for the gun possession and a one-and-a-half year custodial sentence for the ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.
The court heard that on September 1, around 10 p.m., personnel from the Rapid Response Unit were on mobile patrol in Ottley Hall when they spotted Bowens walking towards them. When he got about 10 feet away from the officers, Bowens threw the gun into some bushes.
The weapon was retrieved and it was discovered that the bullets were lodged in the gunâs chamber at the time. When cautioned by the officers, Bowens replied: âThat na mine.â
Bowens told Magistrate Young two men were running and he saw where one placed the gun, so he retrieved it.
