Durant, a fisherman of Rose Bank, was brought before the courts on two counts of marijuana possession. Durant pleaded guilty to having 460 grams of marijuana with intent to supply. He also pleaded guilty to cultivating 22 plants of indigenous cannabis.
Chief Magistrate Sonya Young fined Durant $1000 to be paid forthwith for the 22 plants or spend six months in prison. He was also fined $1400 for the 460 grams of marijuana or in default spend seven months behind bars.
On May 5, a joint operation between members of the Chateaubelair Police and the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) took them to the defendantâs home to execute a search warrant.
A black bag containing the marijuana was found in Durantâs kitchen. He told the officers it was for him to boil.
A further search conducted around the house found a large tub containing the 22 small plants, along with two other small buckets. Durant then told the officers, âI told my son not to plant them there.â
When Magistrate Young asked why his fifth form son planted the marijuana, Durant replied, âWell you know children nowadays, them disobedient and dem does do them own thing,â Durant stated. He further stated that he does not smoke marijuana but rather boils it to drink.
