Maloney, 30, a contractor of Richland Park, was sentenced on Monday at the High Court when he appeared before Justice Gertel Thom.
Maloney was convicted last week Friday of the murder of Kendol Joseph, 32, a labourer of Richland Park on March 28, 2006, at Akers.
Joseph died as a result of a single stab wound to the chest.
The Social Inquiry report done by Cammie Matthews showed that Maloney appeared to show remorse and was apologetic about the entire incident and that it was not intentional or premeditated.
Also in Matthewsâ report, he stated that he interviewed some villagers in Maloneyâs community. Some said that he was a very skilled guy. Some even described him as a âshowyâ person.
He also stated that Maloney was deemed a good prospect for reform and doesnât posses the ability to become a hardened criminal or serial killer.
In handing down her judgment, Justice Thom said that the crime was not one which was at the high end of the scale and that it did not warrant the death penalty.
However, Maloney was convicted twice before on assault charges.
Justice Thom ordered that Maloney undergo regular anger management counselling while in prison.
