Stock taking: Two years for stealing five goats, two sheep
29-year-old Keron Mayers and 20-year-old Jamal Roberts will spend the next two years behind bars, after they were found guilty of stealing five ram goats, valued at $950, the property of Apparcia Jones; and two sheep, the property of Ken Baker.{{more}}
Reports are that Jones tied her animals in her yard at around 6 p.m. on Monday, August 27. At around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, she heard the animals making noises. When she looked outside, she saw one of the men unknotting the goatsâ chains and putting the animals in a white car.
She called out to the men to stop, but they ignored her and drove away. She then contacted the police at Calliaqua, who intercepted the men at Mt. Pleasant.
When the police caught up with the young men, two sheep, along with the five goats that were reported stolen to the police, were found inside the vehicle. Ken Baker later identified the two sheep as his.
In his defence, Mayers told the Court that they were coming from Georgetown when they saw the goats. They then decided to take them and put them in the car.
When they appeared before the Magistrateâs Court on Tuesday, Magistrate Donald Browne described both menâs move as bold, since animals are difficult to rear. He also told Mayers that there are no wild goats in St. Vincent, and any animal seen in the street belongs to someone.
Mayers was sentenced last week Friday, while Roberts was sentenced on Tuesday after he lied to the court about his age. He had claimed that he was 15-years-old and a student of the Carmel High School.
