The Serious Offences Court learnt last Wednesday that it was while police were searching the hills for the 23-year-old woman on Tuesday July 17th, they followed the odor of marijuana into a hut occupied by Mervyn Henry and three other men.

A search of the hut revealed two buckets and four sacks of loose marijuana. All four men were arrested and charged.

Henry, 40, told police that the drugs, which weighed about 80 pounds, belonged to him.

When the four men appeared before Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman, Henry pleaded guilty.

His lawyer, Stephen Williams, begged the court for leniency stating that his client did not waste the court’s time and was very cooperative with the police.

Williams asked for a fine to be imposed but added that because of the nature of the offence, he understood that jail time may be necessary. He therefore asked for a short term.

In sentencing Henry, Magistrate Churaman said that while she will be viewing Henry as a man of good character and acknowledged that he cooperated with the court by pleading guilty, she had to impose a jail term.

She explained that the quantity of drugs pointed to an intent to supply.

The Prosecution dropped the charge against the other men.

Gomez was later found unharmed.(KJ)
