Accused: I wanted to see my mother
Joel Garrick, a labourer of Biabou, was given an additional sentence of three months for escaping lawful police custody on 10 October, 2005. He appeared last Tuesday before Senior Magistrate, Carl Joseph at the Magistrates Court in Kingstown where he pleaded guilty.
Reports state that Garrick was sitting in the courtroom waiting for the police to take him to Her Majesty’s Prison to serve a three month sentence. He however took it upon himself to make a daring escape while no one was looking. He was later apprehended on the 22.
When asked why he tried to escape he said, “I wanted to see my mother, I feel embarrassed.”
