Facts about Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a condition characterized by the formation of malignant cells in breast tissue. There are various types of breast cancer, some of which are more aggressive than others. Statistically, 1 in 8 women is at risk of developing breast cancer, and while it is rare, men can also be affected.

Notably, the incidence of breast cancer among younger women is on the rise. Globally, approximately two-thirds of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at the localized stage, meaning that it hasn’t begun to spread. However in St Vincent and the Grenadines that is not the case, as the patients predominantly present with advanced disease. Early detection is crucial in managing breast cancer as early diagnosis significantly improves prognosis and outcome, increasing the five-year survival rate to as high as 99 per cent.
