The Vital Role of Breast Self-Examination in Early Breast Cancer Detection
by Dr Rikiesha Hutchinson for the SVG Medical Association as part of activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is a formidable opponent that affects millions of women worldwide. Awareness is our greatest ally in the fight against this disease. One essential tool in early breast cancer detection is breast self-examination.
By performing regular Breast Self Examinations, women take an active role in their own health, becoming more familiar with their bodies. This self-awareness enables women to detect any changes promptly and seek medical attention when needed.
While there is no universally agreed-upon schedule for Breast Self Examination, it is generally recommended for women to perform it monthly, at the same time each month, preferably soon after menstruation, as it is easier to detect any abnormalities. It should be done regularly, to be able to distinguish between what is normal vs abnormal. It’s important to remember that Breast Self
Examination is not a substitute for regular mammograms and clinical breast examinations by healthcare professionals.
Breast Self-Examination is a simple yet effective technique that every woman should incorporate into her regular health routine. Here’s how to perform a basic self examination:
1. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you can concentrate without distractions.
2. Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in the size, shape, or contour of your breasts. Check for dimpling, puckering, or any visible abnormalities.
3.Raise your arms and check again for the same changes.
4. Use the pads of your fingers to gently explore your breasts in a circular motion, starting from the outer contour and moving inward. Pay attention to any lumps, or thickening of the breast tissue.
5. Gently squeeze each nipple to check for discharge or any unusual changes.
6. Don’t forget to feel the tissue in your underarm area for any lumps or swelling.
Detecting breast cancer at an early stage significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival. Early-stage breast cancer is often smaller and more localized, making it more treatable. With early detection, breast cancer often requires less aggressive treatments. It allows for a better quality of life going forward.
So, make breast self-examination a part of your regular self-care routine and encourage the women in your life to do the same. Together, we can fight breast cancer and increase the odds of a brighter, healthier future.
