Byera woman remanded on four counts of Shoplifting
Byera resident Shakel Chance has been remanded for one week, after she pleaded guilty to four counts of theft on Monday, November 6 at the Georgetown Magistrateâs Court.
The court heard that on September 30, about 8:32 a.m., the mother of one walked into the Triple R Minimart in Georgetown with a shopping bag and proceeded to shop with a shopping basket. As she paid for items in the basket, she was questioned about the items in the bag, to which she responded that they were purchased elsewhere.
The manager recalled seeing the young woman in the minimart on numerous Saturdays before and it aroused her suspicions.
Footage from video surveillance, when reviewed, showed Chance on September 2, September 9, and twice on September 23 removing items from the shelves and placing them in the shopping bag with which she had entered the minimart.
Chance then offered to pay for the items she had in the bag on September 30, as she had $300 with her, but was informed the police had already been called. Among the items stolen were three large containers of Milo, two Dove body sprays, four packs of Turbo mix, one hand sanitizer, one pound of codfish, one Ponds cream, one vaginal wash, one toilet paper, among other items, an estimated value of $386.75.
Magistrate Burnett told Chance, âLook at how you operated, twice in one day; you got through the first time and you went back. I donât understand your conduct.â
When questioned about her actions, Chance responded âme and my child does be hungry.â
Chanceâs mother was present and told the court she doesnât know why her daughter got herself into that situation. Burnett also questioned if it was a case of poverty or worthless mind, as Chanceâs mother sported âa modern hair styleâ in court.
The items were not recovered.
Shakel Chance was remanded for one week and will return to court on Monday, November 13, when the court will decide what her punishment should be.(CJ)
