‘Media tarnished my reputation – Policeman
A disgruntled police officer who claims the media helped to tarnish his reputation now wants them to make amends.
On Tuesday, police constable Elron Lewis had all charges against him withdrawn when he appeared at the Serious Offences court.
In March, when Lewis appeared before the court to answer 25 charges of deception in relation to the alleged sale of driversâ licences over a period of more than two years, the story was carried in the media.
Lewis told SEARCHLIGHT on Tuesday that he returned the money that he got from the seven persons and as a result, they withdrew their complaints against him.
The police constable is still on suspension, pending the outcome of a case he has before the Appeal Court. He has appealed a six-month sentence laid against him for the first three charges of deception.
The 27-year-old was charged that on September 3 and September 9, 2015 at Kingstown, he, by deception, dishonestly obtained EC$500 on both dates from Kenneth Peters of Lowmans Leeward, with the intention of permanently depriving him of it. He was further charged that on November 20, 2015, he, also by deception, dishonestly obtained $130 from Peters.
He says that the media published his picture and name, thereby tarnishing his good name. He, however, is thanking his mother and sisters for never giving up on him and always supporting him throughout the entire case.
