63-year-old man freed of murder charge

sufficient evidence was not presented before the Serious Offences Court to send Augustus Glasgow to stand trial for murder before a judge and jury at the High Court.

Glasgow, a 63-year-old resident of Greiggs, was freed of a murder charge last Friday, in connection with Ralph Garrick’s death on December 28, 2016.

Garrick was recorded as this country’s 38th murder of 2016 after he was struck on the head in his hometown of Lowmans Windward during an altercation on December 27. He died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) on the following day.

Police later apprehended and charged Glasgow for the murder, however, after being remanded in police custody for five months, he was released.

His freedom came after the Crown presented several witnesses at the Serious Offences Court as part of a preliminary inquiry into the matter.

Notably, following the testimonies of these witnesses, Glasgow’s lawyer Israel Bruce did not make a no-case submission.

Instead, he indicated to the court last Wednesday that the evidence had been presented and it was the decision of the Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias whether what was presented was enough to send Glasgow to stand trial.

Browne-Matthias then adjourned the matter until Friday, when she ruled that based on the evidence presented by the prosecution, she was not satisfied that there was enough evidence to send Glasgow to the High Court.
