Budding writers to learn a lot from ‘First Writes’ workshop

Second-year student at the Errol Barrow Centre for the Creative Imagination (EBCCI) of The UWI Cave Hill Campus and president of VINSA Cave Hill 2017/2018 Nisha Hope will be hosting a six-week Playwriting Workshop: “First Writes,” slated for May 28 to July 2 at Villa, St Vincent.

The first of its kind, First Writes is designed to help budding writers in SVG hone their storytelling skills in a creative environment, while practising the art of dramatic writing. Nisha has undertaken this project in partial fulfillment of her final year thesis.

The aim is to improve the quality and standard of playwriting/scriptwriting, produce completed scripts to be staged, provide opportunities for submission to international playwriting competitions, as well as to source content for publication in First Writes Anthology of Plays.

Nisha is the CEO and co-founder of FOCUS Entertainment INC, established 2014, a talent agency and entertainment company in St Vincent and the Grenadines. She is partnering with local playwrights and other theatre practitioners to give locally available writers first-hand experience and mentorship as part of the programme’s tutelage.

Upon completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Arts, with special focus on Theatre and Film, she hopes to continue providing platforms and avenues for local artists to rise up, as she helps to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in local creatives.

First Writes will take place every Saturday from May 28 to July 2 – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SOV Lounge in Villa. The cost is $200 ($150 before May 9), including refreshments, workbook, and special weekly prizes. To reserve, or for more information, contact (246) 286-3379 or email: firstwritessvg@gmail.com .
