Carlos James initiates community projects in North Leeward

Volunteers from throughout North Leeward will again come out to the Sharpes playing field tomorrow to continue to rebuild the retaining wall at the Chateaubelair playing field, which was destroyed three years ago during the passage of a trough system.

The project is part of a wider initiative, the North Leeward Community Outreach Programme (NLCOP), spearheaded by government senator Carlos James and launched on Saturday, January 21, 2016 at the Chateaubelair playing field under the theme: ‘Working together to build stronger communities’.

James told SEARCHLIGHT that his programme involves 12 projects, which would be done in the eight communities throughout North Leeward. He said the initiative was designed to foster greater community spirit and to improve the infrastructure within communities.

“It is exciting to see people working together and reigniting that level of community spirit that has been missing for some time. We are hoping to transform our communities through greater collaboration,” James said.

The senator, who failed to capture the North Leeward seat in the December 2015 elections by a mere 12 votes, said that the programme does not involve Government, except where certain permission is needed and that funding and materials will be sourced from private individuals and corporate entities.

The first phase was launched last Saturday, when James and other volunteers turned up at the playing field and began work. James said that he expected a larger turnout tomorrow, as many sportsmen throughout the area have indicated their willingness to participate.

When asked if he would invite area representative Roland ‘Patel’ Matthews to participate, James said no, as it was a matter of initiative and leadership, “If Matthews takes the initiative to do projects, it would be more power to him and more benefits to North Leeward,” James said.

After phase one is completed in Chateaubelair, James said that phase two will be done at Round Hill at Troumaca, which would involve fixing the access road to homes in the area. James said that persons in North Leeward are welcome to bring forward their ideas, as well as volunteer their skills and resources. He is also seeking donations of materials, as well as funding for the programme.(AC)
