International Women’s Day
President, Human Rights Association
In 1977, the United Nations proclaimed the 8th March 2014 as International Womenâs Day in recognition of the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future.
This yearâs theme for International Womenâs Day is “Inspiring Changeâ. As we reflect on this yearâs theme, how have we over the years in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as a society, impacted on the rights of women socially and culturally?{{more}}
Too many women have suffered, and continue to suffer abuse, whether physical or mental in domestic relationships. Women who enter into the political arena have been subject to insult and debasement.
Despite this, women continue to strive for equality, and in many instances have achieved great academic and professional success.
As women, we are concerned about the health facilities here in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; we applaud the doctors, nurses and other health workers who continue to provide exceptional service in trying conditions, but as women we feel that more should be done in the area of health care. So, on this day, we seek to inspire change in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in health care services.
As we continue to reflect on the theme, we are concerned about the level of unemployment in our society and we recognize and encourage the efforts of individuals, governmental and non-governmental authorities to wrestle with this issue.
The Human Rights Association urges the Government to continue to commit to gender equality and the empowerment of women as a fundamental Human Right in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
We call on all women to appreciate their worth and on this International Womenâs Day, to inspire change â be the change!
