Question and Answer with the Poorsah

He has been a staple of the calypso and soca scene for decades, and never disappoints.

This year, another first for the Mayreau Regatta was the presence of former calypso, soca and road march monarch Cornelius “Poorsah” Williams.{{more}}

The versatile artiste was scheduled to perform at the Mayreau Hard Court on the third night of activities (Saturday), but the show was cancelled because of rain.

Accompanied by backing band Energy out of Union Island, and complemented by DJ Kano, the veteran showed what he was made of at Saline Bay the following day, during the sailing competition interval.

Q: What motivates you to keep going?

A: I’ve been singing as far back as I can remember, so I don’t really think I need any motivation for singing; it’s just a natural part of me now.

Q: How do you manage to stay relevant after all these years?

A: We gotta keep on changing with the times; its very important that we do. Although my music hasn’t crossed all the way over to some of the new music that we’re getting, but I try to bridge the gap somewhere here and there; and I think that is what is working for me.

Q: What advice would you give to up and coming artistes?

A: Make up your mind to work hard. Know what you want, and don’t give up after a couple tries if you don’t succeed; because sometimes success is just around the corner of giving up.

Q; What are you coming with this year?

A: This year I will be taking part in all three or all four competitions: Road March, Soca Monarch, Calypso and Raga Soca competition. So you could be looking for a variety of songs this year… this year is going to be a general year for me.

Q: How do you expect to do in the 2012 carnival season?

A: Like every other season, I expect to do well. I don’t really go into a season thinking that it’s going to be a bad season. So, my hopes are always up; it’s as high as it has always been this year; I always intend to do well and I always expect to do well.

I hope we have a peaceful and joyful carnival 2012. I hope people could understand that the more we fight, the more we disrupt the thing and we don’t want to mash up carnival.

Q: What is your favourite Poorsah song?

A: You will have to give me a couple years to sit down and figure that one out…. I have a couple of favourites, but I don’t think that one really stands out; I like “Hairy Bank”, I like “Bull Pistle”, I like “Eye Water”, I like “Diana”.

Q: Which local artistes are you impressed with?

A: I have a couple of artistes that impress me: Fireman is a stalwart as we all know. In the calypso arena I’m impressed with Patches Knights, Vibrating Scakes, Jamesy P is a very good entertainer, Luta have a couple of songs that I really admire, but generally I appreciate everybody.
