Guyanese exhibitors at the Everything Vincy Plus Expo – A good thing!
The Everything Vincy Plus Expo held from October 26 to 29, 2023 has concluded, leaving in its wake not only a sense of accomplishment on the part of participants and organisers Invest SVG, but also a noteworthy discussion about the participation of Guyanese exhibitors. While some locals have expressed concerns about the perceived competition these external exhibitors bring to the local market, there are compelling reasons to celebrate their inclusion in the event.
The location of this year’s expo, situated on the northern end of the runway of the decommissioned E T Joshua airport at Arnos Vale, marked a significant departure from previous venues at the Geest Shed and the E T Joshua terminal building. The change of location was welcomed by both exhibitors and attendees, offering more space and improved comfort. However, logistical challenges such as inadequate night lighting, electrical outages, rain, and parking issues did test the mettle of the organizers. Yet, these challenges, while inconvenient, do not overshadow the overall success of the event.
The key point of discussion arising from this year’s expo is the participation of Guyanese exhibitors, and whether their presence was justified. We firmly believe that it was not only justified but also crucial for several compelling reasons.
St Vincent and the Grenadines is part of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), which promotes the free movement of goods and people among CARICOM member states. In light of this, local entrepreneurs with aspirations of expanding their businesses should be eyeing the possibility of exporting to other CARICOM nations. It would be inconsistent to seek markets beyond our borders while excluding producers from fellow CARICOM nations.
The inclusion of producers and service providers from outside SVG enables local businesses to benchmark their products in terms of quality, presentation, and price. Exposure to other producers within the region fosters competition and innovation, lifting the overall standard. Local businesses can also explore opportunities for collaboration with foreign exhibitors.
The presence of overseas businesses at the expo enhances the attraction for local attendees. It allows Vincentians to access products not readily available locally, providing consumers with a wider range of options. The expo serves as a platform for exploring new products, which benefits both consumers and local businesses.
Vincentian producers have been active participants at expos and trade fairs across the region for years. It would be a disservice to the principles of fair trade and regional cooperation to exclude exhibitors from other Caribbean countries.
By exposing ourselves to new products and diverse ways of doing things, we strengthen our local businesses. The competition and collaboration with producers from other Caribbean nations can only help our economy grow and diversify.
The decision to include Guyanese exhibitors at the Everything Vincy Plus Expo aligns with the values of regional integration, fosters innovation, and contributes to the economic growth of SVG. Furthermore, we support the announcement by the Executive Director of Invest SVG that, in the future, exhibitors will be invited from other Caribbean countries, not just Guyana. This step toward broader regional collaboration is a testament to our commitment to a more united and prosperous Caribbean.
