SVG TT team outdone in CACSO qualifiers

St Vincent and the Grenadines table tennis players were no match for their opponents in the Caribbean and Central America Sports Organization (CACSO) champions, which ended on Saturday, in La Habana, Cuba.

The four-member team, represented by Carlton Daniel, Romano Spencer, Damion Dublin and Kavir Gaymes, finished 13th in the teams’ competition, while in the individual men’s ranking, which involved 52 players, the Vincentian quartet was only better than one.

The final rankings showed Daniel – 48th, Spencer – 49th, Dublin – 50th and Gaymes – 51st.

Drawn in Group 4 of the men’s teams competition, St Vincent and the Grenadines were defeated 0-3 by Guyana and Panama, and suffered a 1-3 loss to Haiti.

In their first outing versus Guyana, Christopher Franklyn beat Daniel 11-6, 11-2, 11-6 and Shemar Britton overcame Gaymes 11-4, 11-7, 11-6

And in the doubles, Nigel Bryan and Shemar Britton had the better of Spencer and Gaymes 12-10, 12-10, 11-7.

When matched up against Haiti, Danika St Fleur had a 12-10, 12-10, 12-10 win over Daniel Dublin, and whipped Gaymes 11-7, 11-13, 11-2, 11-4 and in the doubles, the pair of Olivier and Paul Diouley outdid Gaymes and Dublin 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8.

Daniel, though, had an 11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6 ousting of Diouley.

Facing Haiti in match three, Omer Avital stopped Spencer 11-6 ,11-5 , 11-5, with Jacobo Vahnish outpointing Daniel 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 and Jose M Cachajeiro and Jacobo beat Gaymes and Spencer 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 in doubles play.

 St Vincent and the Grenadines’ journey ended with a 1-3 dismissal by Honduras in the play-offs for the consolation prize.

Honduras’ wins came from Oscar Valeeriano who beat Daniel 11-8, 11-7, 11-2, with Jose Urbina going past Spencer 11-8 11-8 , 11-3 and Cesar Reyes outplaying Danile 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7.

 Spencer and Gaymes gave the Vincentians some self-satisfaction, as they saw off Reyes and Valeriano 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, in the doubles segment of the pairing.

 The qualifiers were used as qualifiers for this year’s Central America and Caribbean Games, set for Colombia, July 19 to August 3, this year.

 The St Vincent and the Grenadines team was completed by Joseph Carrington, coach and Montgomery Howard, manager.
