Marriaqua football competition sees expansion in 2017

The 2017 National Lotteries Authority/FLOW/Hairoun Marriaqua Football League, set to open May 7, at the Cane End Playing Field, will see an expanded version this year.

Yosiah Dasent of the organizing committee revealed that apart from the Senior Division, there will be an Under-13, Under-15 and Under-19 grouping.

Dasent noted that the number of teams should swell from the 20 that participated in the 2016 edition.

He informed that a knockout competition will be added to the Senior Division, with the cash prizes also showing increases.“The first place team will receive $2,500, up from $2,000, while the second place gets $1,500 and the third place $1,000,” Dasent said.

When the final was staged last year, Humble Lions recorded a one-nil win over Downstreet.

Humble Lions will usher in the 2017 competition when they meet Richland Park Pride and Joy in the opening fixture.

The featured match will be preceded by a March Past of the teams, as well as addresses by government and sports officials.

Teams can collect registration forms from the Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) Zone Three Office in Mesopotamia, Juliet Francis, or from Dasent.

The cost of registration to the senior division is $300.
