Petersville takes stand for Reading

As they marched from their school through the streets of Kingstown Park and Paul’s Avenue, singing lustily, the students of the Petersville Primary School celebrated their Hats off to Reading programme in fine style last Friday, February 24.{{more}}

With various creative hats made out of bristol board and newspapers, the students put on their best smiles and poses for the SEARCHLIGHT camera as they marched by with their teachers and classmates.

This year’s programme was held under the theme: “Reading, the gateway to knowledge”.

Literacy co-ordinator at the school Christine Martin said the school hosted a number of activities which ran from February 20 to the 24. Some of those activities included spelling, reading, songs and poems.

Martin said with the cooperation from teachers and parents, the programme was able to run smoothly.

“It was really better than expected,” Martin added.

She noted that teachers have seen some improvement in some students’ work, but noted that they much work still needs to be done for the weaker students.

“I think with the help of the parents and teachers, that cooperating spirit is what will be helpful to the children…,” Martin said.

Martin urged parents to assist and encourage their children to do homework.
